Speaker biography: Dr Ghassan Baliki
Dr Ghassan Baliki, Director of the Welfare Research Program, ISDC – International Security and Development Center
Dr. Ghassan Baliki is the Director of the Welfare Research Program at ISDC. His current research focuses on the interlinkages between violent conflict and human welfare at the micro-level, with particular focus on food security and nutrition. His methodological areas of expertise include experimental and quasi-experimental impact evaluations, spatial analysis, and machine learning. In the past five years, he has conducted large-scale rigorous impact evaluations in emergency settings such as in Northeast Nigeria, South Sudan and Syria. Ghassan obtained his PhD in 2017 from the Humboldt-University of Berlin, where he studied the microdynamics of the Syrian conflict using spatio-temporal event data. He was previously a Marie Curie Fellow at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) and has worked as consultant for the EU, GIZ and the World Bank.
