Speaker biography: Dr Noam Angrist
Dr Noam Angrist, Executive Director, Youth Impact, Botswana
Noam Angrist’s interests centre on bridging the gap between rigorous evidence that can enable youth to thrive and translation into scaled intervention and policy.
Angrist is the Executive Director and co-founder of Youth Impact, one of the largest youth-led NGOs dedicated to scaling-up health and education programs backed by rigorous randomized trial evidence. The organization, headquartered in Botswana, has reached over 100,000 youth across ten countries and has run randomized trials in partnership with J-PAL, solidified multi-year partnerships with UNICEF, USAID and the Brookings Institution, and signed an MOU with the Botswana government to scale-up evidence-based programs nationally.
Angrist is also a Fellow at the University of Oxford. He has published in a variety of peer-reviewed journals including Nature, Nature Human Behaviour, and the Journal of Economic Perspectives. Angrist has consulted for the World Bank Chief Economist and led key aspects of the development of the World Bank Human Capital Index education pillar. This includes the development of Harmonized Learning Outcomes and a new global measure of education, Learning-Adjusted Years of Schooling, which has been adopted as an indicator by the World Bank, DFID and USAID to track education systems at the country-level and to inform priority investments among cost-effective education programs and policies.
Angrist has a B.S. in Mathematics and Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a PhD from the University of Oxford where he was a Rhodes scholar. Angrist has conducted research at the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), the White House, and the University of Botswana as a Fulbright Scholar. Angrist received the Forbes 30 under 30: Social Entrepreneurs award for his work with Young 1ove, is a World Economic Forum Global Shaper, and has presented Young 1ove’s work on various platforms including at the Skoll World Forum.
